Guardsman Ranks

Recruits

Trainee

The working class of the Militia. Trainees are used for hard labour that higher ranks are excused from. They have little to no rights and are there only to work under anyone who wishes to order them about. A Trainee can order no one. A good Trainee finds a personal tutor. With loyalty and quick learning they advance to a more respectable status.

Uniform: Chain coif, ring sleeves/leggings/tunic, plate gorget. Round wooden shield only.

Untrusted Trainee

A special status applied to Trainees who have previously left the Militia under bad terms or have shown disloyalty. They must work their way back into trust from scratch. Lex Darion himself held this rank after returning from exile.

Footman

The basic trooper of the Militia. The Footman knows how to battle and follow basic commands. They have gained knowledge in the ways of the Militia and proven loyalty through active service. On reaching Footman, a member may instead apply for an alternate career (Craftsman, Recruiter, etc.).

Uniform: Chain leggings, tunic and coif. Plate gorget. Round wooden or metal shield.

Guard Ranks

Rookie Guard

Has proven worth multiple times but is not yet fully accepted among the fully-fledged. Those who refuse orders or displease officers may have difficulty reaching this rank. May be chosen to join a Division.

Requirements: Good roleplaying ability. Completing the Guard Quest. Two sponsors who recommend you.

Guard

A seasoned warrior knowing different battle techniques and tactics, having proven great loyalty to the Militia. A Guard has built a network of friends to support him. May be chosen to join a Division.

Veteran Guard

After facing many foes in service of the Militia and patrolling many roads, the Veteran Guard has earned a reputation among peers. A hardened warrior who knows when to draw steel and when not to.

Accepted Guardsman

A fully accepted, full-fledged Guardsman. The rank above Veteran Guard, representing complete acceptance within the Militia structure.

Retired Veteran Guard

The Retired Guard has seen a lifetime of bloodshed, war and crime. He settles in Yew with a mug of ale, pondering long-lost friends and occasionally bragging to younglings of the good old days. To reach retirement is an achievement few can brag of. Still bound by the Oaths. May wear clothing instead of uniform.

Officer Ranks

Sergeant

Experienced in combat with great tactical skill and ability to lead and inspire. Has the right to ride a horse. Acts as a coordinator — when present, ensures patrols are sent out and troops trained. For every ten Guards there should be a Sergeant.

Major

Senior officer. For every forty Guards there should be a Major. May never leave Headquarters without the escort of at least two other guardsmen.

Recruiter

Finds new members, shows them into the guild and makes them part of the Militia. Travels far and wide seeking those appropriate to join. Spreads word of the Militia, leaves out the Tome to prospective recruits.

Uniform: Shadow chainmail tunic, leggings, ringmail gloves and boots.

Division Ranks

Divisions are tightly knit groups of fully-fledged Guards, bound by friendship and equal values. Each has a Master leading them, and a "First" (second-in-command). Division members must be at minimum Rookie Guard.
